Candlestick decorated with floral motifs in silvered blown glass.
This technique is known as poor's (or peasant's) silver. It is blown glass in which a hole is left at the base to pour an amalgam of mercury and lead, which adheres to the internal walls; the same principle as the mirror. At first glance the object appears to be silver.
Produced mainly in Alsace and Bohemia, it was in great vogue between 1840 and 1890, especially among the less affluent classes, who could not afford items of real silver.
In excellent conditions, it has small silvering defects.

Candeliere decorato con con motivi floreali in vetro soffiato e argentato.
Questa tecnica e' conosciuta come argento dei poveri (o dei contadini). Si tratta di vetro soffiato in cui viene lasciato un foro alla base per versarvi un amalgama di mercurio e piombo, che aderisce alle pareti interne; lo stesso principio dello specchio. A prima vista l'oggetto sembra essere di argento.
Prodotto principalmente in Alsazia e Bohemia, fu in grande auge fra il 1840 ed il 1890, specialmente fra le classi meno abbienti, che non si potevano permettere articoli di vero argento.
In ottime condizioni presenta piccoli difetti dell'argentatura.
