Gaetano Chierici (1838-1920). Oil on the tablet.
On the back, in pencil, we read: "A variant (completely different) of the well-known painting "LA MASCHERA" at the Pinacoteca di Brera. The author, Gaetano Chierici, in his old age sketched some of his most acclaimed paintings, however refusing to sign them."
With another handwriting, in ink: "I am giving this sketch to my friend Attilio Vercelli" Signature: Vittore Grubicy de Dragon.
Although this painting does not have the author's signature, the provenance and what is indicated on the back confirm that it is certainly an original work by Chierici.
Vittore Grubicy de Dragon, who signs the transfer of the painting, was an esteemed gallery owner and art dealer, who promoted the works of important Italian artists of the time and in turn a recognized painter.

Sul retro, a matita si legge: "Una variante (completamente diversa) del notissimo quadro "LA MASCHERA" della Pinacoteca di Brera. L'autore, Gaetano Chierici, nella Sua vecchiaia ha sbozzato dei ricordi di quadri suoi più acclamati, rifiutandosi però di firmarli."
Con altra mano, ad inchiostro: "Cedo all'amico Attilio Vercelli questo bozzetto" Firma: Vittore Grubicy de Dragon.
Nonostante su questo dipinto non vi sia la firma dell'autore, la provenienza e quanto indicato sul retro confermano che si tratta certamente di un’opera originale del Chierici.
Vittore Grubicy de Dragon, che firma la cessione del quadro, era uno stimato gallerista e commerciante d'arte, che promuoveva le opere di importanti artisti Italiani dell'epoca ed a sua volta un riconosciuto pittore.
